Packed with protein but low in fat, carbs, and calories, tuna is a great source of lean protein. A four ounce serving provides about 65 percent of the recommended daily intake of protein. Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin B6, and iron, this fish contains nutrients which may help ward off such illnesses as hypertension, atherosclerosis, AMD of the eye, cardiac arrhythmia/sudden death.  The omega-3’s in tuna may also aid in preventing cognitive decline associated with such illnesses as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.  Tuna may offer protective benefits in preventing certain types of cancer – cancers of the digestive tract, breast, kidney, ovaries, and pancreas. Since tuna is a predatory fish, it may contain high levels of mercury and so should be consumed in moderation.  Albacore may contain high levels of contaminants – only 5 ½ ounces per week should be consumed.  Yellowfin is lower in contaminants- about 15 ounces per week is okay.  However, women who are pregnant or nursing may want to limit their consumption of this fish to no more than three six-ounce servings or less per month. Overall, tuna’s many health benefits appear to outweigh the risk of mercury contamination if this fish is moderately consumed.  This versatile fish can be a great addition to your healthy eating plan.   Author:  Susan Taylor, RD, LD www.rdoncall.com     If you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to my RSS feed!

Seafood Lovers Unite!  The Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival held on Sunday, April 29, 2012  provides a way to both indulge in all manner of seafood and support a worthy local cause. Panoramic Memorial Waterfront Park will play host to live music provided by such bands as Southwood and the East Coast Party Band.  Family fun events include a shrimp eating contest, shag dancing contest, and plenty of activities for the kids!  Area restaurants will provide plenty of tasty morsels to sample while watching the boat parade.

Let’s not forget the main event –the blessing of the local shrimp fleet by clergymen in hopes of a prosperous and safe 2012 shrimping season.  This event started almost 25 years ago to support the local shrimping industry and has grown into one of our most popular, anticipated local events.  While the shrimping industry is not as large as it once was, it is still a vital part of this area’s economy that continues to benefit from the support of the local community.

Plenty of shrimp and local seafood will be on hand to feed the hungry throngs of festival goings—come early but don’t forget to  bring a lawn chair, an appetite, and plenty of sunscreen to enjoy a day of sun and fun.  Event hours are from 11:30 am – 6 pm. This is one spring festival not to be missed!
