Probiotics — The Good Bacteria!

Wikipedia defines probiotics as “live microorganisms proposed to be beneficial  to the host organism.”  A healthy human digestive tract may contain about 400 kinds of probiotic bacteria responsible for reducing the growth of harmful bacteria thereby promoting a healthy gut.  Probably the most well known of the “good bacteria” is Lactobacillus acidophilus often found in live yogurt cultures.

Typically, probiotics are often used to prevent diarrhea, cramping, and gas after a round of antibiotics which kill all bacteria–both good and bad.  The lack of beneficial bacteria may also lead to vaginal yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and other intestinal illnesses.  Good bacteria may also be killed by common, everyday things such as birth control pills, coffee, tea, fluoride, radiation, stress, preservatives, and food additives.

Lactobacillus bacteria may help in the treatment of such conditions as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, strengthen the immune system, improve nutrient assimilation, produce cancer or tumor suppressing compounds, increase energy levels, and detoxify preservative materials in the diet.

Supplements are one way to get in your probiotics if you’re not able to do it by eating whole foods.  A great one to try is InLiven, a raw, certified organic, naturally fermented product made from whole organic foods.  InLiven contains 13 strains of lactobacillus bacteria which over a 3 week fermentation period have been subjected to a variety of stressors–heat, cold, chlorine, salt, alcohol, and food preservatives– to produce a “super family” of very strong Lactobacilli unlike any others available today.  This superbreed of beneficial bacteria is more bioavailable for the body to use and assimilate the broad spectrum of nutrients.
